Based on the 2023 Updated AGS Beers Criteria® for Potentially Inappropriate Medication Use in Older Adults, The AGS Beers Criteria® mobile app is a valuable tool for clinicians to implement prescribing recommendations. This app provides a compendium of medications that should be avoided or used with caution in older adults due to their potential unfavorable balance of benefits and harms.

<li>Browsing options for medications in various categories, including Potentially Inappropriate Medications (PIMs) for Older Adults, PIMs for Older Adults with a Specific Disease or Syndrome, Drugs to Use with Caution in Older Adults, Drug – Drug Interactions, PIMs Due to Reduced Kidney Function, Drugs with Strong Anticholinergic Properties, and Criteria Removed.</li>
<li>Ability to add bookmarks and take notes within the app.</li>
<li>Access to patient resources on medications and older adults specifically designed for older adults and caregivers.</li>
</ul>

The AGS Beers Criteria® aim to guide both older people and health professionals away from potentially harmful medications. Additionally, they help health systems assess care quality by recognizing appropriate medication decisions. While the criteria do not provide an exhaustive list of inappropriate treatments, they describe specific medications with evidence suggesting that they should be:

<ol>
<li>Avoided by most older people (outside of hospice and palliative care settings)</li>
<li>Avoided by older people with specific health conditions</li>
<li>Avoided in combination with other treatments due to the risk of harmful "drug-drug" interactions</li>
<li>Used with caution because of the potential for harmful side effects</li>
<li>Dosed differently or avoided among people with reduced kidney function, affecting how the body processes medicine</li>
</ol>

The AGS Beers Criteria® are intended to complement the experience and knowledge of healthcare providers and should not be the sole basis for medication prescriptions. They should also not be used to justify restricting health coverage.
